I donated all the proceeds from the shoots to Nicole, to aid in her rehabilitation.  I scheduled the majority of the shoots over the span of one day so I had to find a location that would give me some diversity.  I found the gorgeous little park outside the MOMA which offered just that.  Here is a small excerpt of my engagement and family sessions…

I met Casey about 8 years ago when she was working at Rolf’s Salon in Phoenix.  I was hired to photograph their advertising campaign and Casey was one of their stylist and selected models for the day.  I was struck by her beauty and ease in front of the lens mixed with a cool and calm energy.  She was what I call, “good people”, and  I knew, or at least hoped, that this one encounter wasn’t going to be the last. (Here is her image from the shoot).  Since that day, we’ve been in contact on a few occasions and I’ve had the pleasure of seeing her at weddings I was covering for her friends and sister. Every time I would see her at a wedding she would tell me, “when I get engaged, I’m going to call you!”.  Low and behold, three months ago, I got the call.  She was engaged to an awesome guy and fellow artist, Brian.

For the shoot, Casey called in Deanna Rene, one of my all time favorite hair and make up stylists now living in Laguna.   Deanna tagged along during the shoot, assisting with the lighting, touch ups, and beach blown hair.  It was such a treat to have her help!

So much of the success of a family session begins with the outfits.  It is extremely important to find colors which will complement not only you but the location in which you present the photo whether it be for holiday cards or as a canvas for your wall.

First things first, ask yourself these questions:

- What is our family style?  If you don’t know, look around your house.  Are you more modern, formal, traditional, or casual?  Do you guys find yourselves in jeans, kakis, or do you like to dress up.  Regardless of what you choose, always err on the more formal side.  Meaning, if your husband likes to wear t-shirts, consider putting him in a button down collard shirt (guys always look better in collard shirts, IMHO) with jeans.

- What is the final product that you want to create with your images?  Are you wanting a family photo for a mantlepiece or is this just for holiday cards?  If you are wanting to print images for your walls, you’ll want to select colors in your shoot which compliment the style and look of your home.

- Based on your style and home, you’ll want to decide where you want to do your session?  Most good photographers will have a portfolio of great locations in mind, but they will be looking to you for guidance to help narrow down their list of locations.  If it’s a city session, consider bright colors.  If you are in the woods or on the beach, consider more neutral or earth tones.

I realize selecting colors for a group of people is no easy task so to help you visualize color options, I found these clothing palates on pinterest which should help lead you in the right direction.

Always beware of patterns which are distracting to the eye.  The above is just a sample to show colors and combinations, but bold stripes, wording, and distracting patterns are a no-no.  (So ignore those outfits above with the stripes). And I realize it’s super tough to find kids clothes in solid colors, but they are out there…I promise!

Also, I’m not a fan of white.  The wrinkles and contrast in white clothing can sometimes be unforgiving when it comes to how you look on camera.  Additionally, if one person is in white and the rest in color or black, the attention is usually drawn to just the person in white.  If you want to be the only one people look at, then go for it!

For tops, look for sleeves to cover the shoulders or arms.

For jewelry, go simple or bold (depending on your style).  Just don’t over do it.

Finally, DO NOT wait until the last minute to find your clothes!  If you don’t feel like you have any matching outfits in your closets, go to a store and do some hunting ASAP.  Remember that your photo session is an investment.  You are spending hard earned money to have images that will document your family for a lifetime.  You don’t want to regret having to “settle” for something in your closet that doesn’t look good in print.  When in doubt, lay out your outfits on your bed or ground, take a photo with your phone and send it to your most trusted stylish friend or photographer and get their feedback.   If they don’t think it works, be sure to give yourself enough time to go out and buy something else.

Dear Hollye,

Over a year has passed since Lisa and Brian’s wedding and I was hoping to see you in person one day but it’s doubtful that will happen in the near future. I just wanted to tell you how perfect the photographs of the wedding are. Every time I look at them it takes me back to Cloverdale, CA . The most impressive thing about your work is that you not only have captured the moment but also the emotion that embraced that moment. For me personally I was riding a roller coaster of emotions and each time I view the wedding album it’s like getting back on the ride. Thank you so much for creating a lasting memory of that magical day.
