This was such a stunning wedding. From start to finish and through every detail from the colored gobos, unique art inspired florals, succulent bouquet, this was a wedding scene created for the art at heart.
Not only were they a gorgeous couple, but unbelievably cool! Lauren and Shawn said their ‘I Dos’ at the Phoenix Art Museum which offered a ton of unique photo opportunities that perfectly represented their style and uniqueness. Not only was it the cool backdrops and art that made the photos interesting but there was so much expression of love. One of my favorite moments was just before Lauren was going to walk down the stairs with her father to the ceremony, she looked over to her father with her hand over her heart and he looked back at her with a quick grin then they both started laughing. It was a personal exchange that I’m sure neither of them will never forget.
I had the opportunity to meet the two love birds almost a year ago when we did their engagement session in the Fall. From the moment I met them, I knew this was going to be a great event. It’s hard to really describe when you know two people are in love but with the outpouring of emotion and sincerity in their vows you could tell these two were truly soul mates.
The decor was spearheaded by Lewis Medansky and the flowers and design were by William at Avant Garde
L&S thank you for the opportunity to be a part of it all!!

A woman came up to Picasso and asked him to sketch something on a piece of paper.
He sketched it, and gave it back to her saying: “That will cost you $10,000″.
She was astounded. “You took just five minutes to do the sketch,” she said. Isn’t $10,000 a lot for five minutes work?
“The sketch may have taken me five minutes, but the learning took me 30 years,” Picasso retorted.
Of course, when I make an image, it takes milliseconds…or more precisely and depending on your fstop, about 1/500th of a second. But it’s not so much the microsecond of time that it takes or the hour and a half that is spent with the client, but it’s the 8.5 years of working as a professional and nearly 18 years of making images in high school and college, the 3 years working as an intern, the mistakes and the critiques, the hours at the bookstore pouring over images, the hours in the darkroom inhaling toxic chemicals, the expensive competitions, the pages of editorial images (mainly from Vanity Fair) ripped out and delicately placed in my inspiration album, the countless dollars spent on equipment, insurance, and operating costs that exist to set up and run the business that are all in play when we photograph a session.
There is something in my heart that aches when that is taken for granted. And I know that it’s not my clients fault for asking. I would be doing the same thing if I were on the other side of the camera…beacuse it seems natural to want to have an archiveable copy of an image that can be reprinted at ease years down the road. I totally get that. But unfortunately, I think the digital world has begun to devalue the real cost of photography which is again, why we don’t just offer disks in the sessions. So I always hope that my clients aren’t offended when I explain that the digital files for sessions (other than weddings) are not for immediate sale with out at first getting something tangible.
The touchable, tangible, print for me is alive and is the fuel for what I do. It’s the print on the wall or in a book that I know will truly go the distance. It will be passed around, shared, possibly graced with a frame, and viewed not only on facebook, but by real LIVE friends. I don’t care so much if people know that I shot the image, so much that it serves to put beauty in the world that is not so limited to the computer screen…and I’m so hopeful that people understand when I tell them that I don’t give away my digital files.

I’ve known Natalia for the past 8 years and we have been crossing paths randomly since we first met. I photographed her and her brother for their mom about 6 years ago and I was thrilled when she called me out of the blue to photograph her head shots. Natalia was a complete natural in front of the lens and I love what we were able to create. Thanks Natalia for a great shoot and a great time!!
Angela Karp, co-owner of Arizona’s top event studio Angelic Grove, will be part of a discussion panel next week for AZ Central. She and 4 others will be giving commentary on the upcoming royal wedding. The discussion will be divided into ten topics (Kate’s dress, florals, bridesmaids, Kate’s hair, Prince William’s look …)
The magazine needs a headshot of her and we’re in a bit of a bind as to which one to send. We wanted to get some viewer feedback on your fave. A little background about Angela….She is a Brit. Style maven. Always impeccably dressed. Incredibly sweet!!
Based on those facts… which shot do you like best…
Hey all you iphone users!!
I get asked quite often what my favorite iphone apps are so I decided to do a blog posting on my faves and what they will do for your images.
Here is a breakdown of my most used apps….to get the best results, use them in combination with each other.
Last Monday I did a Marie Antoinette inspired shoot for the cover of Phoenix Bride and Groom and searched the archives of Pinterest.com to build my inspiration board for the shoot. I found this site as a suggestion from my good friend and site designer, Ryan Brannen who always seems to be on the up-and-up when it comes to new eye candy on the web.
Since then, I’ve been using this site to push my visual dictionary farther and to stay on top of current trends in photography as well as finding cool framing ideas, landscaping inspiration, hair style tips, and things I would like to put in my belly. In photography as in most things, it’s never good to copy, but to find inspiration and to make it your own is the greatest way to push yourself as an artist.
If you go to Pinterest…I warn you, you may find time slipping by fairly quickly. Definitely give yourself about 30 minutes to an hour to browse the wonderful collection of images. To check out what I’ve been pinning or to follow my board, click here

Happy Viewing!
